The shattered star gods the Necrons turned on, whose shards they now hold in bondage.

C'tan Shards are fragments of the C'tan, a type of pure energy being with godlike abilities that were defeated by the Necrons millennia ago and shattered into various shards. These shards retain immense power, as demonstrated when a shard of the Void Dragon C'tan is discovered on a Tomb World in the Koronus Expanse. The shard is powerful enough that Inquisitor Xavier Calcazar, Lady Theodora, and Archmagos Amarnat formed a plan to activate it and leash it, using its power for themselves.

Reader's Guide

The C'tan Shard of the Void Dragon is a central plot element in Warhammer 40,000: Rogue Trader. It is discovered on a Tomb World in a remote system. The shard is powerful enough that a plan was devised to leash it and use its power. The device required to bind it was completed using technology recovered from the Cult of the Final Dawn's stronghold. The shard is ultimately awakened and attacks. The player's choices determine its fate: it can be destroyed, the player can swear loyalty to it and join it in submission as it prepares to devour the Koronus Expanse, or it can be imprisoned using the device by either Calcazar or the player themselves.
