The BZK-005 was first publicly demonstrated at the Zhuhai International Airshow in 2006, where video and models were shown. Its design incorporates a few stealth features, a satellite data link antenna housed in a large upper body dome, and an optic-electric sensor system under the body. The baseline BZK-005 is an unarmed reconnaissance version, while the BZK-005C, revealed by Chinese state media on 11 November 2018, is an optimized variant with attack and reconnaissance capability, able to carry bombs or missiles with a payload exceeding 300 kg. The BZK-005E, an export-oriented variant announced in November 2018, has a maximum takeoff weight of 1,500 kg, a 370 kg payload, and endurance up to 40 hours.

In service, the BZK-005 is operated by the People's Liberation Army Air Force and Navy. In August 2011, a BZK-005 crashed into a farm field near Xingtai, Hebei Province, with photos of the wreckage appearing on Chinese internet sites. In April 2019, the UAV was confirmed to be used by the Chinese military for maritime surveillance over the East China Sea, and was intercepted by the Japan Air Self-Defence Force after violating Japanese air space. In August 2021, a BZK-005 was spotted over the East China Sea alongside two Y-9s, speculated to be an upgraded variant configured for wide-area ISR missions with an undernose synthetic aperture radar radome and a ventral electro-optical/infrared turret.
