Lore & Background
The Talash UAV is based on plans drawn up by researchers at the Isfahan Academic Center for Education, Culture and Research (Isfahan University Jihad) in 1985. It has small dimensions and is controlled by pulse-code modulation (PCM) radio, capable of performing maneuvers such as rolls and turns. Two models exist: the Talash-1 and Talash-2, with several differences. The Talash-1 has landing gear for takeoff and landing, while the Talash-2 uses a JATO launcher (compressed gas launcher) for takeoff and a parachute for recovery. The Talash-2 can be identified by a longer nose and raked wingtips, and it has greater speed and maneuverability than the first model.
Reader's Guide
The Talash drones serve distinct roles within Iranian military training. The Talash-1 is a training UAV used to instruct ground operators in close-range remote piloting techniques. The Talash-2 was designed as a basic training target for anti-aircraft systems, allowing crews to practice engaging aerial threats. Both versions have a secondary purpose of harassing the enemy, who may believe the drone is a threat and take cover. Despite their limited control range of just 0.5 km, these drones provide a low-cost platform for developing operator skills and testing air defense responses. Their simple design and production by Quds Air Industries mark the beginning of Iranian indigenous drone manufacturing.
