Iranian combat drone unveiled in 2013, largest at its debut.
The IAIO Fotros, named after a redeemed fallen angel in Shia mythology, is an Iranian unmanned aerial vehicle designed for reconnaissance, surveillance, and combat. Built by Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industries Corporation, it was the country’s largest drone when first shown in November 2013. Depending on its weapon load, the Fotros can fly for 16 to 30 hours and has an operational range between 1,700 and 2,000 kilometers. It can carry up to six missiles or bombs, including at least six Ghaem precision-guided munitions or three other unnamed precision-guided munitions.
The drone was unveiled jointly by Iran’s Ministry of Defense, the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force, and the Islamic Republic of Iran Army. Its debut is believed to have been rushed to occur before the P5+1 nuclear talks began. After its 2013 announcement, no news or status updates emerged until 2020, when the Fotros took part in a military drill called “Defenders of Velayat Skies.” That same year, it was reported that the drone had entered service, additional images were released, and production is thought to have started, with at least three units built.
