El Clásico (El Clàssic in Catalan), "The Classic", is the name for any match between Barcelona and Real Madrid. It first meant league games only and now covers every meeting, including the Champions League, Copa del Rey and Supercopa de España. It is counted among the fiercest rivalries in sport.
Background
Under president Santiago Bernabéu, who helped create the European Cup, Madrid won its first five editions in the 1950s. The rivalry first reached European competition when the clubs met twice in the European Cup in the 1960s: Madrid won on the way to their fifth straight title in 1959–60, and Barcelona won the next meeting in 1960–61 before losing that final.
