Following the death of Optimus Prime and his passing of the Matrix of Leadership to Ultra Magnus, Unicron intervenes. This planet-devouring Transformer re-creates a heavily damaged Megatron as Galvatron. As part of this reconstruction process, Thundercracker is transformed alongside other Decepticons. Thundercracker becomes Cyclonus, or in some interpretations within the text, he is grouped with Insecticons becoming Scourge's huntsmen. This event marks a distinct turning point where original G1 characters are replaced by new iterations loyal to Galvatron. In Their Own Story

The year is 2005, and the war has escalated to a cosmic scale. In The Transformers: The Movie, the Decepticon ranks undergo a brutal restructuring under the influence of Unicron. Thundercracker stands among the survivors of the battle for Autobot City, only to be captured or severely damaged. Unicron, fearing the power held by the Autobot Matrix of Leadership which Hot Rod had acquired from Optimus Prime's dying hands, demands new soldiers. He re-creates the heavily damaged Megatron into Galvatron. Simultaneously, he transforms Thundercracker and others. The text specifies that Thundercracker becomes Cyclonus, joining a new order of elite warriors. This transformation is not voluntary but a result of Unicron's will to create an army capable of challenging the Autobots. This event happens while Rodimus Prime eventually takes out the Matrix to destroy Unicron, leaving the transformed Decepticons as his primary antagonists in this specific continuity.
