Optimus Primal's origin in this timeline begins before his arrival on Earth, following the destruction of his homeworld by the planet-eating Transformer, Unicron. As Scourge and the Terrorcons hunted them for the Transwarp Key, the previous Maximal leader, Apelinq, sacrificed himself to allow the others to escape the devouring planet. Primal assumed leadership during this exodus, guiding the remaining Maximals to Earth with half of the key split for safety. His backstory is deeply tied to a human tribe he and his forces worked with for thousands of years, entrusting them with the second half of the Transwarp Key to keep it safe from Scourge's reach.

In Their Own Story

Upon reuniting with the Autobots in Peru, Primal faces immediate tragedy when Scourge corrupts his warrior Airazor with Dark Energon. When Airazor is fully overtaken and threatens Elena Wallace, Primal makes the heartbreaking choice to kill her at her own request to save the human. Later, during the final battle above Earth, the Autobots and Maximals fight a desperate war against Scourge's army while Noah Diaz and Elena attempt to deactivate the Transwarp Key. As the portal opens for Unicron, Prime prepares to sacrifice himself by destroying the key. In a critical turning point, both Primal and Noah intervene, saving Optimus Prime from being sucked into the imploding vortex. This act destroys the remaining Terrorcon army and leaves Unicron stranded, securing Earth as the new home for both factions.
