In the Transformers comic series by IDW Publishing, Arcee's origin took a dark turn in the 2008 story *Spotlight: Arcee* by writer Simon Furman. This narrative depicted her as having once been genderless before being forcibly turned female by the mad scientist Jhiaxus. The resulting trauma turned her into an insane murderer, a backstory later criticized by writer Mairghread Scott for being sexist. Subsequent stories written primarily by John Barber and Jenevieve Frank revised this history. They established that Arcee is a trans woman and clarified that her insanity stemmed from post-treatment medical abuse rather than the fact of her gender change. In Their Own Story

Arcee's cinematic journey has been marked by near misses and brief stints on screen. She was initially set to appear in the 2007 *Transformers* film, generating positive fan reaction, but director Michael Bay dropped her because there was not enough time to explain a "female" in a robotic race.
