1980 Tour de France
Hinault's knee gives way and Zoetemelk wins at the tenth attempt.
The 1980 Tour de France was the 67th edition, run over 22 stages and 3,842 km. Bernard Hinault began strongly, winning the prologue and two stages, but knee problems forced him to abandon while leading, 21 seconds ahead of Joop Zoetemelk, just as the race was about to enter the Pyrenees. Zoetemelk took over the lead and defended it to Paris, finishing nearly seven minutes ahead of Hennie Kuiper; it was his first victory in his tenth Tour after five second places. Rudy Pevenage won the points and intermediate sprints classifications, Raymond Martin the mountains and Johan van der Velde the young rider prize. Two weeks before the start only twelve teams had wanted to ride, the Italian and Spanish squads preferring their home Grand Tours.
