Zombie Army 4: Dead War

A co-op shooter set in the ongoing Dead War against Nazi zombies.

Zombie Army 4: Dead War is a third-person shooter from Rebellion Developments. It follows the 2015 compilation *Zombie Army Trilogy* and is a spin-off of the *Sniper Elite* series. The game launched on 4 February 2020 for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, then arrived on Stadia on 1 May 2020, and on Nintendo Switch on 26 April 2022.

The story takes place in 1946, a year after the Resistance defeated Adolf Hitler and cast him into hell. Although the Hellmouth was closed, the zombie horde continued to overrun Allied forces, pushing them back from Germany into France and Italy. Without a leader, the undead are generally weak and easily destroyed in small numbers, but rumors spread of a cult that maintains control over the horde. The conflict is now called the Dead War.

Players begin in Milan, fighting zombies that attack safe houses. The undead show signs of intelligence, using handguns and submachine guns, though they are less skilled than living humans. The protagonists retreat deeper into Italy, encountering more dangerous versions of old enemies with new powers, as well as demonic mutants and vengeful spirits. Hellish, flesh-powered versions of destroyed German vehicles also appear. The journey takes the survivors through Venice, Sardinia, Croatia, Naples, and finally Rome.

The protagonists discover that Hitler was not killed but only banished to hell. Using his Death Cult, he harnesses hell’s energy to build a new army and weapons of mass destruction. To stop him, the survivors travel to hell, sabotage the dead’s war factories, and recover the Sagarmartha Relic from the *Trilogy*. Dr. Efram Schweiger sacrifices himself to return the players to the surface. In Rome, they battle Hitler one last time, destroying his personal Hell Machine and beating him to near death before finishing him with the Relic. Even with Hitler dead, the Survivor Brigade must hunt down his cult and the remaining zombies, knowing that with the Hellmouth closed and Hitler gone, the dead cannot replenish their numbers, bringing the Dead War closer to an end.

Reception was mixed or average for PlayStation 4 and Windows on Metacritic, while the Nintendo Switch and Xbox One versions received generally favorable reviews. OpenCritic reported strong approval, with 63% of critics recommending the game.

Lore & Background

Zombie Army 4: Dead War is set in the year 1946, one year after Adolf Hitler was defeated by the Resistance and banished to hell. Although the Hellmouth Hitler opened was closed, the Zombie Menace continued, with countless Nazi dead overwhelming Allied forces and pushing them back into territories such as France and Italy. Without a leader, most of the living dead are weak and easily destroyed in small numbers, but rumors spread about a cult ensuring the horde has some cohesion and control. The conflict is now referred to as the 'Dead War'.

The story begins in Milan, where players battle invading hordes attacking safe houses. The dead begin to show intelligence, using weapons like handguns and SMGs, though not as competently as living humans. The protagonists retreat deeper into Italy, encountering more dangerous versions of previous foes with new appearances and powers, as well as deadly new enemies that appear as demonic mutants and vengeful spirits. Hellish versions of destroyed German vehicles and armor appear as hell-powered abominations. The journey takes players to survivor brigade locations in Venice, Sardinia, Croatia, Naples, and finally Rome.

The protagonists discover that Hitler was not killed, only banished to Hell. Using his Death Cult, he harnesses Hell's energy to build a new army and weapons of mass devastation. The survivors travel to Hell itself, sabotage the dead's war factories, and recover the Sagarmartha Relic from the Trilogy. After Dr. Efram Schweiger returns them to the surface at the cost of his own life, they battle Hitler one last time in Rome, destroying a massive Hell Machine and defeating the Zombie Leader with the Relic. Even with Hitler dead, the Survivor Brigade must chase his cult and remaining zombies, knowing the dead can no longer replenish their numbers.
