Lore & Background
Lost Planet: Extreme Condition is set in the year T.C. -80 on the ice-covered planet E.D.N. III. After Earth became uninhabitable due to war, global warming, and pollution, the megacorporation Neo-Venus Construction (NEVEC) planned to colonize the planet. E.D.N. III is inhabited by the Akrid, an aggressive insectoid alien species that generate thermal energy. Humans, living as snow pirates, harvest thermal energy from fallen Akrid to survive the extreme cold. The story follows Wayne Holden, a soldier who awakens after thirty years frozen in a damaged Vital Suit, and joins a crew of snow pirates to oppose NEVEC's Frontier Project, which threatens to wipe out all life on the planet's surface.
Reader's Guide
Lost Planet: Extreme Condition was developed by Capcom with Jun Takeuchi as producer and executive producer, Kenji Oguro as designer, and Shin Kurosawa as writer. The main character Wayne was modeled after South Korean actor Lee Byung-hun, using Face Robot software for facial expressions and a full-body 3D scan. The game was designed to be a commercial success in both North America and Japan. It was originally intended as an Xbox 360 exclusive, but was later ported to Windows and PlayStation 3. The game can be purchased from the Xbox digital store and played on Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles via backward compatibility. Its multiplayer modes—Elimination, Team Elimination, Post Grab, and Fugitive—require players to manage thermal energy, which affects the ability to use Vital Suits and certain weapons. The game's legacy includes its distinctive thermal energy mechanic, large-scale boss fights, and the integration of mech combat with on-foot grappling hook traversal.
