The war against Darken Rahl is the story of Wizard's First Rule (1994), the first Sword of Truth novel. Some twenty years after magical boundaries were raised between Westland, the Midlands and D'Hara, the D'Haran Empire under Darken Rahl invades the Midlands while Rahl hunts for the Boxes of Orden.

Background
The book opens a few weeks after the murder of Richard Cypher's father. Richard meets Kahlan Amnell, discovers that his mentor Zedd is the wizard she seeks, and is named Seeker of Truth. The three travel to the Midlands to find the last Box of Orden that Rahl needs, and Richard and Kahlan fall in love. It ends with Richard killing Rahl by tricking him into a mistake, and with the truth about Richard's parentage.
