Darken Rahl is the ruler of the D'Haran Empire in Wizard's First Rule, the first Sword of Truth novel. He invades the Midlands and tries to gain control of an ancient power over life, the magic of the Boxes of Orden.

Background
Richard kills Rahl by tricking him into a mistake, and learns his true parentage: he is Darken Rahl's son. Opening the boxes tears the veil between the worlds of the living and the dead. Richard later accepts that he is a war wizard and Darken Rahl's gifted son and claims the throne of D'Hara. Rahl's spirit appears in the Temple of the Winds and will not let Richard leave unless he takes the plague willingly. His other children include Jennsen and Oba Rahl, who are pristinely ungifted; Jennsen spends most of her life hiding from him.
