Background
Before the series, a magical boundary was raised to separate D'Hara from the Midlands and end a war between them; the novella Debt of Bones tells of its creation. In Wizard's First Rule the D'Haran Empire under Darken Rahl invades the Midlands. Richard later claims the D'Haran throne to unite the Midlands against the Imperial Order. Through the Bond created by Alric Rahl, everyone who swears allegiance to the Lord Rahl is protected, and pure-blooded D'Harans always know where he is. At the end of the series Richard declares the traditional D'Haran devotions unnecessary.
