Elrond

Master of Rivendell and bearer of Vilya who guided the Free Peoples through the Second and Third Ages.

Elrond Half-elven is a central figure in J. R. R. Tolkien's legendarium, born at the refuge of the Mouths of Sirion to Eärendil and Elwing. Having chosen to be counted among the Elves while his brother chose Men, he lived for thousands of years through the Second and Third Ages. He serves as the master of Rivendell (Imladris), a secluded valley established after Sauron destroyed Eregion. As the herald of Gil-galad, the last High King of the Noldor, Elrond witnessed the fall of great kings and the taking of the One Ring by Isildur. He is renowned for his archaic style of speech, which uses genuinely archaic grammar to reflect his immense age and status without becoming quaint.

Lore & Background

Elrond's history spans from the First Age to the end of the Third. Captured as a child by the sons of Fëanor, he was befriended by Maedhros and Maglor rather than killed. In the Second Age, during the War of the Elves and Sauron, Elrond defended Eregion until it fell, then retreated north to found Imladris after being driven back by Durin and Amroth's counter-attack on Sauron's rearguard. He later led the army from Imladris for the Last Alliance of Elves and Men. At the siege of Barad-dûr, he stood with Gil-galad when the king fell and saw Isildur take the Ring instead of destroying it despite Elrond's urging. Entrusted with one of the Elven Rings by Gil-galad, he wore Vilya, the Ring of Air, throughout his long life. He married Celebrían, daughter of Celeborn and Galadriel, early in the Third Age.

He is described as a "master of healing" and uses his title carefully, distinct from the usage of "Lord." His role involves setting conditions for his daughter Arwen's marriage to Aragorn: he would only permit it if Aragorn united Arnor and Gondor as High King. This condition served as incentive rather than cruelty, ensuring Aragorn fulfilled his hereditary duty while securing Arwen's future. When the Grey Company found Aragorn during their journey, Elrond's advice via Elrohir proved crucial for reaching Gondor in time. Ultimately, after the Ring was destroyed and its virtue lost, Elrond prepared to depart Middle-earth at approximately 6,520 years old, reuniting with Celebrían over the Sea.
