Born to Arathorn II and Gilraen, Aragorn was two when his father fell pursuing orcs. Elrond fostered him in Rivendell, hiding his identity as Isildur's heir by renaming him Estel until he turned twenty. On that day, Elrond revealed his ancestry, gave him the shards of Narsil and the Ring of Barahir, and withheld the Sceptre of Annúminas. Aragorn assumed the role of sixteenth Chieftain of the Dúnedain, guarding the Shire as Strider. He served in the armies of King Thengel of Rohan and Steward Ecthelion II, even leading an assault on Umbar where he killed the Corsair lord. At forty-nine, he visited Lothlórien and met Arwen again; on Cerin Amroth, she renounced her immortality to marry him. Elrond stipulated that marriage could only occur once Aragorn became King of both Arnor and Gondor.

In Their Own Story

At eighty-seven, Aragorn met Frodo Baggins at the Prancing Pony Inn in Bree, guiding the hobbits safely to Rivendell despite Nazgûl pursuit. There, he joined the Fellowship, and Elven-smiths reforged Narsil into Andúril, marking it with seven stars and a crescent moon. When Gandalf fell fighting a Balrog in Moria, Aragorn led the company to Lothlórien and down the River Anduin. After Orcs captured Merry and Pippin, he tracked them to Fangorn Forest with Legolas and Gimli, finding Gandalf returned from death. In Rohan, he fought at Helm's Deep after Gandalf freed King Théoden. Aragorn then used a palantír to reveal himself as Isildur's heir to Sauron, drawing the Dark Lord's forces out of Mordor. This distraction enabled Frodo and Samwise Gamgee to destroy the Ring. Following victory in Gondor, he led armies against the Black Gate before being crowned King.
