Background

At least 14 feet tall, he lives in the ancient Forest of Fangorn, which bears his name, at the southern end of the Misty Mountains near the Gap of Rohan, with Saruman's Isengard at its south-western corner, Rohan to the east and south and Lothlórien to the north. The rivers Limlight and Entwash run through its thick, humid woods, home also to the more secretive Huorns, and from the Entwash the Ents brew their Ent-draughts.

Ents were made in the Elder Days as Shepherds of the Trees, to guard them from the Dwarves, and were awakened and taught to speak by the Elves; only Treebeard, Leaflock and Skinbark survive from that time. In The Two Towers he meets the hobbits Merry and Pippin, takes them to his home at Wellinghall and hears of Saruman's treachery, a meeting whose consequences shape the rest of the story.

He remembers walking the woods of Beleriand that now lie beneath the waves, and says there are valleys in Fangorn where the Great Darkness of Morgoth's rule never lifted.
