Background
He comes to the Council of Elrond as his father's messenger with news of Gollum's escape and is chosen for the Fellowship. On Caradhras he runs lightly over the snow to scout, in Hollin he helps beat off Saruman's wargs, in Moria he recognises Durin's Bane as a Balrog, and in Lothlórien he speaks for the company to the Elf-sentries. The ancient quarrel between Elves and Dwarves, sharpened by Thranduil's treatment of Gimli's father Glóin, sets him against Gimli at first; they become friends when Gimli greets Galadriel with respect.
Galadriel's parting gift is a longbow, with which he brings down a Nazgûl's flying steed in the dark with a single shot. After Boromir's death he, Aragorn and Gimli pursue the orcs who took Merry and Pippin across Rohan, meet the returned Gandalf in Fangorn, fight at Helm's Deep and see Saruman fall at Isengard. He then walks the Paths of the Dead with Aragorn and watches the Dead terrify the Corsairs of Umbar at Pelargir.
A message from Galadriel warns him to beware of the Sea, foretelling the end of his days in Middle-earth. Commentators treat him as the story's typical Elf, seeing farther than anyone in Rohan and sensing the lost Elvish past in the stones of Hollin.
