Background

Her mother Celebrían was the daughter of Galadriel of Lothlórien, and her elder brothers are the twins Elladan and Elrohir. Her name means noble maiden in Sindarin, and she was called Evenstar as the most beautiful of the last generation of High Elves in Middle-earth.

The appendix The Tale of Aragorn and Arwen tells how Aragorn, in his twentieth year, met Arwen for the first time in Rivendell, where he lived under Elrond's protection. She was then over 2,700 years old, newly returned from living with her grandmother Galadriel in Lothlórien, and he fell in love at first sight. Thirty years later they were reunited in Lothlórien, and on the mound of Cerin Amroth they committed themselves to marrying. In making that choice Arwen gave up the Elvish immortality open to her as Elrond's daughter and agreed to remain in Middle-earth instead of travelling to the Undying Lands. Elrond will not allow the marriage until Aragorn is king of both Arnor and Gondor.

She appears at the feast in Rivendell after Frodo wakes there, and her brothers bring Aragorn her gift of a black banner, unfurled at the Pelennor Fields to show Elendil's emblem in mithril, gems and gold. After the Ring is destroyed she marries Aragorn in Minas Tirith and gives Frodo her white-stone necklace, the Evenstar. They had a son, Eldarion, and at least two daughters; she dies a year after Aragorn, aged 2,901. Liv Tyler plays her in Peter Jackson's films, where she takes Glorfindel's place rescuing Frodo at the Fords of Bruinen.
