Amon
The masked leader who claimed spiritual power but used bloodbending to remove bending.
Amon, born Noatak, is the primary antagonist of the first season of Nickelodeon's The Legend of Korra. Created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko with collaboration from Joaquim Dos Santos, he is voiced by Steven Blum. Amon leads the Equalists, an anti-bender revolutionary group in Republic City dedicated to eliminating bending to ensure equality between benders and non-benders. He publicly claims to be a disfigured non-bender granted spiritual powers to permanently remove bending, a feat previously only demonstrated by Avatar Aang.
However, this ability is revealed to be bloodbending used to block chi paths. His true identity as Noatak, the eldest son of criminal Yakone and older brother of Tarrlok, is exposed when Tarrlok reveals his face and tells Korra and Mako in a public setting (the police station) that he is a waterbender; at the Equalist rally, Amon is unmasked by Korra.

Lore & Background
Amon's past begins as Noatak, the eldest son of the notorious crime lord Yakone. Trained in bloodbending from a young age alongside his brother Tarrlok, Noatak displayed prodigious talent, eventually mastering the technique by age fourteen without the aid of a full moon or physical gestures. After witnessing their father's abuse and turning against him, Noatak ran away, resurfacing years later as Amon to lead the Equalist revolution. He fabricated a backstory involving a firebender disfiguring his face, creating a false burn scar to reinforce his image as a victim of bender oppression.
While he claimed spiritual empowerment, his power was purely physical manipulation of chi. Their childhood was marked by harsh training under Yakone, but Noatak was not depicted as protecting Tarrlok from verbal abuse; years of training hardened him into an emotionally detached strategist who viewed his victims without empathy. His identity was ultimately exposed not by an instinctive waterbending save, but when Tarrlok revealed his face and told Korra and Mako in a public setting (the police station) that he was a waterbender; later, at the Equalist rally, Amon was unmasked by Korra.
Reader's Guide
To understand Amon, one must recognize him as a calculating manipulator who executed plans with precision. His costume and mask were designed to reference Chinese and Korean traditions while remaining simple enough for animation, serving as an iconic symbol of the revolution. In Book Four: Balance, Korra experiences a hallucination where Amon removes her bending, and Toph Beifong later notes that while he fought for the wrong side, his desire for equality was a reasonable motive.
Amon's voice performance by Steve Blum emphasized his dual role as both a conceptual and physical threat. His childhood name, Noatak, shares a hairstyle with Korra, an unintentional connection noted by co-creator Bryan Konietzko that suggests shared cultural commonalities despite their opposing roles. Critics have compared him to Guy Fawkes and historical dictators, noting his populist tactics and the cult-like nature of the Equalists.
