Lin Beifong
The iron-willed Chief of Police who bridged the gap between Toph's legacy and Republic City's modern chaos.
Lin Beifong serves as the Chief of Police of Republic City in Nickelodeon's animated series The Legend of Korra (2012–2014). Voiced by Mindy Sterling, she is the older daughter of Toph Beifong, a legendary earthbender who aided Avatar Aang. Created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, Lin inherited her mother's mastery of earthbending and metalbending, along with mechanoreception to sense movement through vibrations. Initially antagonistic toward the new Avatar, Korra, she interrogated her upon arrival but eventually warmed up, forming a bond forged through shared battles against the Equalists.

Lore & Background
Lin's character design was inspired by Han Young Ja and Marlene Dietrich, aiming for a "tough and natural beauty." Her personality is described as tough, uncompromising, blunt, and bitter, largely stemming from strained relationships with her mother, Toph, and her sister, Suyin. Unlike Toph, Lin struggled with resentment until the latter half of the series, where she reconciled with both women. Her romantic history includes a past relationship with Tenzin, Aang's son; they broke up because Tenzin wanted children while Lin did not, compounded by her abrasive nature. While Tenzin married and had children, Lin remained unmarried. She learned her bending techniques under the hard tutelage of her mother, eventually rising to lead Republic City Police Force.
Reader's Guide
Lin Beifong acts as the Chief of Police in Republic City, utilizing earthbending and metalbending to enforce law. She possesses mechanoreception, allowing her to sense movements through ground vibrations. Her journey spans from an antagonist to Korra's ally during the Equalist crisis in Book One (2012), where she lost her bending to Amon but had it restored by Korra. In Book Two (2013), she reinstated as Chief, investigating the Southern Water Tribe Cultural Center bombing and promoting Mako after clearing him of Varrick's frame-up. By Book Three (2014), she traveled outside Republic City to Zaofu, confronting her half-sister Suyin regarding family rifts caused by Toph's parenting and past illegal acts. Through these conflicts, Lin evolved from a bitter, rigid enforcer into a reconciled family member, learning to balance duty with personal connections.
