The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars

The Legend of Korra: Turf Wars is a trilogy of graphic novels written by Michael Dante DiMartino and illustrated by Irene Koh. The story picks up right where the animated series left off, following Avatar Korra as she copes with the destruction Kuvira caused in Republic City and navigates her new romantic relationship with Asami Sato. DiMartino was inspired to continue the story after seeing how warmly fans responded to Korra and Asami getting together. Moving from animation to comics was difficult for him, but it also allowed the team to explore LGBTQ+ themes more freely. The series was first announced in July 2015. Part One came out on July 26, 2017, Part Two on January 17, 2018, and Part Three on August 22, 2018, all published by Dark Horse Comics. Parts One and Two were the publisher’s best-selling graphic novels in 2017 and 2018, respectively. A collected library edition was released on March 13, 2019.

Critics generally praised the trilogy for how it handled Korra and Asami’s romance, as well as DiMartino’s writing and Koh’s art, which captured the look and feel of the original show. However, the new villain, Tokuga, was seen as lacking depth.

**Plot**

**Part One:** Korra and Asami, now a couple, have to cut short their vacation in the spirit world when a giant rock spirit attacks them, angry that Korra opened a new spirit portal after her fight with Kuvira. They travel to the Southern Water Tribe to tell Korra’s parents about their relationship. Her parents are supportive, but Korra gets upset when her father warns her not to come out publicly because of Water Tribe traditions. Back in Republic City, they find that developer Wonyong Keum plans to turn the land around the spirit portal into a tourist attraction, despite opposition from the Air Nomads and spirits. A dragon-eel spirit begs Korra to close the portal to stop its exploitation, but she refuses, believing the portal will eventually help the city. The next day, Korra and Asami join Tenzin and Zhu Li to help refugees left homeless by Kuvira’s attack, but struggle to work with President Raiko, who is focused on his reelection campaign. That night, the Triple Threat Triad attacks the Air Nomads at the portal on Keum’s orders. Korra, Asami, and their friends Mako and Bolin—now police officers—rush to help.
