Zaheer was born after the Air Nomad genocide and grew up as a non-bender, but became fascinated with Air Nomad culture and airbending philosophy, studying it rigorously. He became an ardent spiritual follower of Guru Laghima, a legendary airbender who attained independent flight. His expertise brought him into contact with the Red Lotus, an offshoot of the White Lotus that believed the Avatar must promote absolute freedom, not balance. Zaheer was a prominent member and the candidate to teach the next Avatar airbending, despite being a non-bender at the time. After failing to kidnap the infant Avatar Korra, Zaheer was imprisoned in isolation on a mountaintop. Following Harmonic Convergence, he spontaneously gained airbending, escaped, and freed his fellow Red Lotus members. He assassinated Earth Queen Hou-Ting and threatened to kill all airbenders to draw out Korra. The Red Lotus captured Korra and subjected her to mercury poisoning to trigger the Avatar State, intending to kill her. During the final battle, Zaheer witnessed the death of his lover P'Li, which allowed him to achieve independent flight—the first airbender to do so since Guru Laghima. Though defeated and re-imprisoned, Zaheer remained a powerful influence on Korra, who struggled psychologically for years. He later offered to guide Korra in the Spirit World as an ally, agreeing because Kuvira's regime contradicted his beliefs.
