The Legend of Korra season 2

Book Two: Spirits is the second season of the American animated television series The Legend of Korra, created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. It contains fourteen episodes, referred to as chapters, and places greater emphasis on spiritual concepts and themes than the first season, Book One: Air. The season was ordered in early 2011 and began airing on Nickelodeon in the United States on September 13, 2013.

The series is set in a world where certain people can telekinetically control one of the four classical elements, and the Avatar is the only person capable of bending all four, tasked with maintaining balance. This season centers on Avatar Korra accepting her role as the bridge between humans and the mystical Spirit World. The story takes place six months after the events of Book One, shifting between Republic City, the Spirit World, and the South Pole, home of the Southern Water Tribe. Korra’s uncle Unalaq, chief of the Northern Water Tribe, takes control of the Southern Water Tribe as part of a plan to free Vaatu, an ancient dark spirit. The narrative follows Korra’s friends as they try to gain support for the southern tribe in Republic City, while Korra works to stop Unalaq and learn about spirits. A two-part episode titled "Beginnings" explores the history of the Avatar lineage, telling the story of Wan, the young man who became the first Avatar after trying to maintain balance between the material and spirit worlds and atoning for empowering Vaatu.

New characters introduced include Unalaq and his children Desna and Eska; Kya and Bumi, siblings of Korra’s mentor Tenzin; and Varrick, an eccentric, wealthy inventor and businessman from the Southern Water Tribe.

In early 2011, during production of Book One: Air—originally planned as a standalone 12-episode miniseries—Nickelodeon ordered fourteen additional episodes to create a standard 26-episode season. By June 2012, the writing for Book Two was finished, and the episodes were being storyboarded and animated. Joshua Hamilton and Tim Hedrick, writers from Avatar: The Last Airbender, contributed to the scripts, and the season’s episodes were directed by Colin Heck and Ian Graham.
