Some Kind of Love
A promotional single from the Killers' fifth album.
Last updated
The Killers' track "Some Kind of Love" appears on their 2017 album Wonderful Wonderful and was issued as its second promotional single on September 15, 2017. The song is a tribute to frontman Brandon Flowers' wife and includes backing vocals from the couple's three sons.
Background and release
Brandon Flowers began writing personal songs for Wonderful Wonderful but second-guessed himself, so he played some for his wife Tana, who has PTSD. He sought her approval, and "Some Kind of Love" struck a chord with her as he wrote it to lift her spirits. The song was released as the second promotional single on September 15, 2017 via digital retailers and streaming services.
Composition
"Some Kind of Love" blends synth-pop, dream pop, and art pop, written by Brandon Flowers and Jacknife Lee. It borrows from Brian Eno's "An Ending (Ascent)," which inspired the track. Flowers originally sought Eno's permission to sample it for the band's 2006 album Sam's Town, but Eno refused. After Bono and Anton Corbijn reached out to Eno, Flowers finally spoke with him.
Flowers learned Eno had told his manager he was done using the song. Eno then gave his approval. The song also includes Flowers' three sons on backing vocals. When his wife Tana heard it, she broke down crying, and Flowers said he is proud of that moment.
Critical reception
Critical response to "Some Kind of Love" was mixed to positive. Rolling Stone's Rory Crow called it "an almost ethereal meditation on love", and Paste Magazine's Lisa Nguyen described it as "a delicate lullaby". However, Stereogum's Pranav Trewn deemed it "the most boring song Chris Martin never wrote", saying it "just plods along without ever justifying the amount of space it takes up".
