My Own Soul's Warning
The Killers' second single from Imploding the Mirage.
Last updated
My Own Soul's Warning is a track by American rock band the Killers, serving as the second single from their sixth studio album, Imploding the Mirage. It came out on June 17, 2020. The song was written toward the end of the album's sessions, after frontman Brandon Flowers began to worry that the record lacked a single and started to panic. It turned out to be the last song composed for the album.
Getting the mix right proved difficult, with the band trying nearly 90 different versions. Flowers called the track a "stubborn son of a bitch." In his commentary for Apple Music, Flowers explained that the song deals with repentance, a subject he noted is uncommon in pop or rock music. He aimed to create something personally meaningful that would also connect with many people, whether in a stadium or through headphones.
Flowers considers it his favorite song on Imploding the Mirage. The band gave a preview of the song's intro during an Instagram live stream in April 2020, two months before the official release. The cover artwork was created by African-American artist Thomas Blackshear. Two music videos were produced.
Second video
The first, released on YouTube on July 16, 2020, offers a glimpse of a forthcoming short film directed by Sing Lee, tied to the Killers' upcoming album. This film was set to premiere on Apple Music, and the video includes Americana-themed snippets and multiple storylines. The second video, directed by Michael Hili, debuted on YouTube on August 20, 2020. It shows frontman Brandon Flowers and drummer Ronnie Vannucci Jr. on a road trip in a pickup truck, driving through cornfields and snow-covered forests.
Uproxx ranked the song number five on its Best Songs of 2020 list, while NME placed it at number fourteen. Credits for the track list Brandon Flowers on vocals, synth, organ, and glockenspiel, and Ronnie Vannucci Jr. on drums and percussion. Additional personnel include Jonathan Rado on production, bass, organ, guitar, cello, string synth, and piano; Shawn Everett on production, recording, and mixing; Ivan Wayman and Robert Root on engineering; Ariel Rechtshaid on mixing; Bobby Lee Parker on guitar; Rob Moose on strings; Roger Joseph Manning Jr. on keys; Brian D'Addario on acoustic guitar; and Emily Lazar on mastering.
Recording took place at Subtle McNugget Studios and Electro-Vox Recording Studios in Los Angeles, and at Battle Born Studios in Las Vegas. Mixing was done at Subtle McNugget Studios and Effie Street Studios in Los Angeles, with mastering at The Lodge in New York City.
