On Top (The Killers song)

A synth-pop track from the Killers' debut album.

Last updated

"On Top" is a song by American rock band the Killers, appearing as the seventh track on their debut studio album Hot Fuss (2004). Written by all four band members and produced by Jeff Saltzman alongside the Killers, it has become one of their most popular live songs. The track was also released as a B-side to "Mr. Brightside."

Background and release

"On Top" was among the earliest songs written by the Killers, dating to around 2002. Guitarist Dave Keuning later recalled thinking the song was "pretty good material" and believed it might do well if released.

The track first appeared on a self-released demo CD in 2002 that was distributed at Las Vegas gigs, and it resurfaced on an early version of Hot Fuss handed out at Las Vegas shows in 2003. It was included on the 3-Song Demo and 5-Song Demo CDs in 2003, as well as the Mr. Brightside EP released in September 2003. The song was formally released with the rest of Hot Fuss in the United Kingdom on June 7, 2004, and in the United States on June 15, 2004.

Reception

Critical response to "On Top" was generally positive. NME described the song as "icy synthtronica meets Springsteen" and compared its vocals to Bono or Le Bon.

PopMatters called it the album's "finest moment," praising its synthesizer-driven dance sound and Mark Stoermer's bassline. The Pigeon Press, however, considered it one of the more forgettable tracks on Hot Fuss, noting its electronic focus felt experimental. The Spinnaker highlighted the piercing synths and melodramatic vocals, while Silent Uproar called it a great song with careful use of keyboards and strong guitars.
