Midnight Show

Second song in the Killers' Murder Trilogy.

Last updated

“Midnight Show” is a song by American rock band the Killers, appearing as the tenth track on their debut studio album Hot Fuss (2004). It was written by frontman Brandon Flowers and bassist Mark Stoermer, and produced by Jeff Saltzman and the Killers. The song forms the second installment of the band's “Murder Trilogy”, depicting the murder of a young girl by her deranged ex-boyfriend.

Background

The song is written in the key of D# minor. Lyrically, it tells the story of a girl named Jenny, the central figure of the Murder Trilogy, who is kidnapped and murdered by her ex-boyfriend after a date. Lyrics such as “I took my baby's breath beneath the chandelier of stars in atmosphere” and “she turned her face to speak, but no one heard her cry” imply the antagonist killed Jenny following their date. Flowers stated he was inspired to create the trilogy after listening to Morrissey's “Sister I'm a Poet”, particularly the line “the romance of crime”, which he said he studied extensively and became embedded in him.

Release and reception

“Midnight Show” was released with the rest of Hot Fuss in the United Kingdom on June 7, 2004, and in the United States on June 15, 2004. Critical reception was positive: Bring the Noise UK described it as “a raucous rock anthem that eventually evolves into this circus-esque spectacle.” Slant Magazine called the song “rollicking,” and Cornell Sun praised Keuning’s guitar contribution before the bridge for amplifying Flowers' menacing singing. Journal of Popular Romance Studies noted the song’s “rock aggression with less masculine-coded emotional sensitivity to depict the most extreme reaction to rejection.”

Live performances

As of October 2025, “Midnight Show” has been performed live 159 times. Its first live performance occurred at Don's Hill Bar in Hudson Square, New York in October 2003, eight months before Hot Fuss was released. It was played frequently during the Hot Fuss Tour (2004–2005) and the Sam's Town Tour (2006–2007). The song was typically performed before “Jenny Was a Friend of Mine” and only twice after “Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf”; on both occasions when the full Murder Trilogy was played, “All These Things That I've Done” followed, prompting speculation about its connection to the trilogy.
