The Laconian commander reveals a secret plan to fire an antimatter ship through the ring gates to provoke a response from the alien entities. This experiment causes the neutron star to collapse into a black hole, emitting a gamma-ray burst that destroys the Tecoma gate and its opposite counterpart. Simultaneously, black tendrils attack the slow zone, annihilating Medina Station and the dreadnought Typhoon in an instant. On Laconia, Duarte falls catatonic during these attacks while his daughter Teresa discovers Amos Burton, resurrected with protomolecule enhancements by repair drones, attempting to rescue Holden.
