Background

As in the original, the story draws on the biblical tale and on McMillen's religious upbringing. Isaac's mother, sure she is doing God's work, takes everything from him and shuts him in his room, and when she comes to kill him he flees to the basement.

Players fight through random roguelike dungeons using Isaac's tears as projectiles. Collected items change his look, stats and abilities and can stack into powerful combinations.

Rebirth received four expansions: Afterbirth (2015), Afterbirth+ (2017), Repentance (2021) and Repentance+ (2024). Afterbirth+ also added support for user-made content.
