Playing career

Davis played college baseball at North Carolina State University from 1982 to 1984. The California Angels selected him in the ninth round of the 1984 draft, and he debuted professionally that year with the Single-A Peoria Chiefs. He batted .258 with six home runs and 29 RBIs in 79 games for the Double-A Midland Angels in 1985, then spent two more seasons there before moving to the Triple-A Edmonton Trappers in 1988. In 79 games with Edmonton, he posted a .257/.335/.310 slash line with one home run.

Davis made his major league debut for the Angels on July 8, 1988, arriving at Cleveland Municipal Stadium an hour before game time. He entered as a pinch runner for third baseman Jack Howell in the fourth inning and stayed at third base despite having not played that position in the minors. A bench-clearing brawl occurred after Indians pitcher Bud Black hit Devon White. Davis appeared in six games for the Angels in 1988, going hitless in 12 at-bats.

He then spent three seasons in the Angels and Kansas City Royals minor league systems. In 1992, he split time between the Double-A Tulsa Drillers and Triple-A Oklahoma City 89ers in the Texas Rangers organization. On April 23, he played his only game for the Rangers as a defensive replacement for catcher Ivan Rodriguez, recording his first major league hit, a single off John Doherty. Davis spent 1993 through 1995 in the minors, serving as a replacement player with the Angels in spring training 1995 during the players' strike. After the strike ended, he became a coach with their Single-A affiliate.

Coaching and managing career

Davis took over as manager of the Pittsfield Mets in 1996. The following year, his squad went 42–32 and captured the New York–Penn League title. By 1999, he had moved up to manage the Double-A Binghamton Mets. He spent 2003 and 2004 as the Florida Marlins' bench coach. In 2007 and 2008, he managed Toronto's Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs, then served as the Blue Jays' Minor League Field Coordinator through 2016. He later worked as defensive coach for the Yankees' Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders before being named their manager on January 27, 2020. Before the 2023 season, he became manager of the Rangers' Triple-A Round Rock Express, leading them to an 89–60 record and a Pacific Coast League championship series appearance, which they lost. On January 21, 2026, he was appointed manager of the Salt Lake Bees, the Angels' Triple-A affiliate.
