Nathaniel Lowe

First baseman for the Texas Rangers from 2021 to 2024, winner of the 2022 AL Silver Slugger and the 2023 AL Gold Glove.

David Nathaniel Lowe (born July 7, 1995) is an American professional baseball first baseman for the Cleveland Guardians. He has also played in MLB for the Tampa Bay Rays, Texas Rangers, Washington Nationals, Boston Red Sox, and Cincinnati Reds. Lowe debuted in the majors with the Rays in 2019.

Lowe attended Pope High School in Marietta, Georgia, where he played upright bass in orchestra and jazz bands. He started his college career at Mercer University in 2014, then moved to St. Johns River State College for 2015, and finished at Mississippi State University in 2016. That year, Louisville Slugger named him a second-team All-American.

The Rays picked Lowe in the 13th round of the 2016 MLB draft, 390th overall. He signed and debuted with the Hudson Valley Renegades of the Low-A New York-Penn League, batting .300 with four home runs and 40 RBIs in 67 games. In 2017, he split time between the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Single-A) and the Charlotte Stone Crabs (High-A), hitting .274 with seven homers and 59 RBIs over 115 games.

He began 2018 with Charlotte, then moved up to the Montgomery Biscuits (Double-A) midseason and was selected for the All-Star Futures Game. The Rays promoted him again in August to the Durham Bulls (Triple-A). Across all three levels that year, Lowe hit .330 with 27 home runs and 102 RBIs in 130 games, earning a spot on MLB Pipeline’s team of the year. He returned to Durham to start 2019.

The Rays called Lowe up to the majors on April 29, 2019. He hit his first big-league home run on July 5 against the New York Yankees, and on July 13 he recorded his first multi-homer game. In 2020, he appeared in 21 games for the Rays, slashing .224/.316/.433 with four homers and 11 RBIs.

On December 10, 2020, the Rays traded Lowe, Jake Guenther, and Carl Chester to the Texas Rangers for Heriberto Hernández, Osleivis Basabe, and Alexander Ovalles. In 157 games in 2021, he hit .264 with 18 home runs and 72 RBIs.

On June 15, 2022, Lowe became the first player to strike out in two immaculate innings in a single game, against the Houston Astros. It was also the first time in MLB history that more than one immaculate inning occurred on the same date—Luis Garcia threw one in the second inning and Phil Maton in the seventh. On August 22, Lowe hit into a 3-6 triple play in the fourth inning, lining out to Twins first baseman José Miranda, who tagged Corey Seager and threw to shortstop Carlos Correa to retire Marcus Semien. For the week ending August 28, he was named AL Player of the Week, batting .385 with four homers and 11 RBIs in six games. He finished 2022 hitting .302 with 27 homers and 76 RBIs, earning the AL Silver Slugger Award for first basemen.

On January 13, 2023, Lowe agreed to a one-year, $4.05 million contract with the Rangers, avoiding arbitration. He played 161 games that season, batting .262 with 17 homers and 82 RBIs, and Texas won the 2023 World Series. Lowe also won his first AL Gold Glove Award at first base. In 2024, he appeared in 140 games for the Rangers, hitting .265 with 16 homers and 69 RBIs.

On December 22, 2024, the Rangers traded Lowe to the Washington Nationals for Robert Garcia. His 2025 salary was set at $10.3 million through arbitration. On June 21, 2025, he hit his 100th career home run off Dustin May of the Los Angeles Dodgers. On August 13, he hit his first grand slam, against the Kansas City Royals. The next day, he was designated for assignment after Dylan Crews returned from the injured list. In 119 games with Washington, Lowe slashed .216/.292/.373 with 16 homers and 68 RBIs. The Nationals placed him on release waivers on August 16.

On August 18, 2025, the Boston Red Sox signed Lowe to a one-year major league contract. He made 34 appearances for Boston, batting .280 with two homers and 16 RBIs. The Red Sox designated him for assignment on November 18 and non-tendered him on November 21, making him a free agent.

On February 13, 2026, Lowe signed a minor league deal with the Cincinnati Reds. The Reds selected his contract on March 23 after he made the Opening Day roster. On August 3, 2026, the Reds traded him to the Cleveland Guardians for Alejandro Rivera and Juan Brito.

Lowe’s brother, Josh Lowe, is also a professional baseball player. They were teammates on Bowling Green and Charlotte and were both in the Rays organization at the same time, though they never shared a major league roster. Their father, David, was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in 1986 but chose to attend the U.S. Naval Academy, becoming a naval aviator and career fighter pilot for 20 years. Before the 2021 season, Lowe was known as Nate Lowe, but his mother asked that he be called Nathaniel professionally after seeing a birthday tweet.
