Career highlights
Mike Devereaux came to the Orioles in a March 1989 trade that sent Mike Morgan to the Dodgers. His most productive stretch ran from 1989 through 1993, peaking in 1992 when he appeared in 159 games, posted a .276 average, and knocked 24 homers with 107 RBIs. That same year, on July 15, he delivered a walk-off homer in an 11-9 victory over the California Angels, a hit that sparked controversy because the ball barely cleared the foul pole. The next day, Angels manager Doug Rader argued the call with umpire Ken Kaiser and got himself tossed before the first pitch.
In 1995, Devereaux earned NLCS MVP honors with Atlanta, driving in the game-winning run in the 11th inning of Game One and smacking a three-run homer in Game Four against Cincinnati. The Braves went on to beat Cleveland in the World Series. His final big-league game came with his original team, the Dodgers, on April 17, 1998. Across 12 seasons, he batted .254 with 105 home runs, 480 RBIs, three grand slams, 635 strikeouts, 85 stolen bases, and 29 errors.
Among players born in Wyoming, he ranks second in career homers, trailing only John Buck. In March 2021, Baltimore elected him to the Orioles Hall of Fame, and he was honored in an on-field ceremony on August 7, 2021.
Post-playing career
Devereaux served as field coach for the Delmarva Shorebirds in 2010, replacing Ryan Minor, who had been promoted to manager. He was field coach for the Frederick Keys in 2011. From 2012 through 2016, he was hitting coach for the Asheville Tourists, then in 2017 was assigned to the Boise Hawks. In 2018, he was hitting coach for the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, and in 2019 for the Dayton Dragons. As of 2021, he was working as a roving hitting, outfield, and base running coach at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. He worked for the Orioles as a guest instructor at spring training in February 2023. On June 30, 2023, he joined MASN as a part-time game analyst on Orioles telecasts, scheduled to broadcast two Orioles home series in July and August 2023.
