Heaney was born in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and attended Putnam City High School in Warr Acres, Oklahoma. He was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 24th round of the 2009 MLB draft but did not sign, opting to enroll at Oklahoma State University. In 2011, he pitched for the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League. In 2012, he was named Big 12 Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Year and a unanimous All-America selection. Heaney signed a two-year contract with the Texas Rangers on December 9, 2022. On April 10, 2023, he recorded 9 consecutive strikeouts in a game against the Kansas City Royals, tying the American League record and setting the franchise record. He made three starts in the 2023 playoffs, including a win in Game 4 of the World Series. Heaney made 32 appearances (31 starts) for Texas in 2024, compiling a 5-14 record and 4.28 ERA. He signed a one-year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates on February 22, 2025, was designated for assignment on August 26, and released on August 29. He then signed a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 31, 2025, and was selected to their active roster on September 27. He announced his retirement on December 28, 2025.
