The Crimson
Every world contains either The Crimson or The Corruption, each with a 50% chance, unless a special seed is used or the player chooses at world creation.[1] The Crimson surface has red Crimson grass, Crimson Trees, Vicious Mushrooms, and red thorny bushes that damage players on contact.[1] Water in The Crimson is red, and the biome contains chasms that lead to circular cavities with small branches ending in a Crimson Heart.[1] Crimson Altars line the chasm passages, and chasms consist of Crimstone, which can be mined with a Nightmare/Deathbringer Pickaxe or higher, blown up with explosives, or purified with Purification Powder.[1]
The Crimson biome features a red, gore-like aesthetic and is characterized by a fleshy infection.[1]
Spread
The Crimson spreads by converting adjacent tiles, slowly in pre-Hardmode and faster after defeating the Wall of Flesh; defeating Plantera reduces spread speed by 50%.[2]
Crimson Desert
In Hardmode, Crimson can spread into Deserts to create Crimson Deserts, where sand becomes Crimsand and Waterleaf cannot grow.[3]
Crimson Snow
Crimson can also spread into Snow biomes during Hardmode, converting Ice Blocks into Red Ice Blocks but not Snow Blocks.[4]
Tips
When a world randomly generates with the Crimson as its evil biome, the Guide provides a hint to destroy a Crimson Heart.[5]
Trivia
Multiple chasms may overlap, forming a cross or X pattern, and the chasm shape has been interpreted as a hand, a heart with veins, or a neuron.[6]
