Production
Warner Bros. Animation approached Bruce Timm about reviving Batman: The Animated Series as a continuation, but Timm refused, preferring to revive Justice League if reviving a DCAU show. After discussing the offer with James Tucker, Timm recalled unused ideas for a pulp, serial, mystery, film noir depiction of Batman, inspiring a new series. Timm and Tucker developed the show, and Warner Bros. Animation informed Timm that J. J. Abrams and Matt Reeves were interested in collaborating; Timm pitched his ideas, which impressed them. In May 2021, the series was announced for Cartoon Network and HBO Max, with Timm as showrunner and ten episodes in the first season. In January 2022, Ed Brubaker was announced as head writer and executive producer; Brubaker originally approached Timm as a freelance writer but was hired as head writer. Additional executive producers include Tucker, Daniel Pipski, Rachel Rusch Rich, and Sam Register.
