Production

Lauren Faust was approached by Warner Bros. to create and develop the series after working on Super Best Friends Forever. The television iteration was announced in May 2017. Tara Strong and Nicole Sullivan reprise their Batgirl and Supergirl roles from Super Best Friends Forever; Grey Griffin reprises Wonder Woman from the web series. A first-look poster of the main characters was released a year later. The series is animated by Jam Filled Entertainment and Boulder Media. Writers modeled each character after a teenager archetype and drew inspiration from Silver Age comic incarnations. Jessica Cruz's characterization was heavily altered due to her original backstory contrasting with the series' lighthearted tone. Several writers previously worked on My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Natalie Wetzig referred to a second season at the 2020 Annie Awards but later clarified it was the second half of season 1. Co-executive producer Amanda Rynda said the crew is introducing new villains and storylines for season 2.
