Production

DreamWorks revealed Trolls: TrollsTopia on January 17, 2020, as a Trolls series heading exclusively to Hulu and Peacock, with an initial premiere set for April 15, 2020. This news came alongside announcements for other projects like The Croods: A New Age, The Boss Baby: Family Business, Cleopatra in Space, Where's Waldo?, The Mighty Ones, Madagascar: A Little Wild, and fresh episodes of Curious George. The series faced a delay because COVID-19 disrupted Peacock’s original programming lineup, but Hulu stuck to its schedule and confirmed a November 19, 2020 release. The first trailer dropped on November 5, 2020. A screenshot appeared in TV Kids magazine’s October 2020 issue. Universal struck a long-term deal with Sky that included Trolls: TrollsTopia, letting viewers in Ireland and the United Kingdom watch it on that platform. That same October, a storyboard for an episode called “Dinner with Dante” featuring a Classical Troll named Dante Crescendo surfaced on Tumblr and was taken down quickly; the series’ animatic opening credits also leaked. Jim Mortensen stated the leaks were stolen. Returning crew from Trolls: The Beat Goes On! included executive producer Matthew Beans and composer Alex Geringas. Animator and director Jim Mortensen came back for the show but left production by February 2020.
