Premise

Each adventure kicks off in the real world, where Gabby is at play in her room. She opens a tiny parcel from the Dollhouse Delivery, found in her Meow-Meow Mailbox, and that triggers a journey into her dollhouse’s animated realm. After slipping on her cat ears headband, she and her toy Pandy Paws shrink down; Pandy then springs to life for a hug attack. CatRat may pop up unannounced in any room. To wrap up, a Gabby Cat of the Day segment has a cat—or sometimes Gabby—leading a craft, song, or snack activity, before live-action Gabby says goodbye.

Characters

Gabby, portrayed in live-action and voiced by Laila Lockhart Kraner, is the host. She wears a magical cat headband that shrinks her to toy size when she sings an incantation; the headband can also change her hair color and activate the Gabby Cat of the Day segment. Pandy Paws, voiced by Tucker Chandler from season 1 through Grandma CatRat and by Logan Bailey from Mermaid Christmas Cruise onward, is a kitty/panda Gabby Cat who serves as Gabby's sidekick and best friend. He starts as a stuffed toy and comes to life in the dollhouse, often ambushing Gabby with hug attacks and carrying a magenta Pandy Pack. Doozie, portrayed in live-action and voiced by Celestina Harris, is Gabby's younger sister who debuts in the upcoming fourteenth season; she is first mentioned by Grandma Gigi near the end of Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie and is into dogs. Puggy, voiced by Sebastian Billingsley-Rodriguez, is a dog who is Doozie's sidekick, similarly coming to life when they shrink into the dollhouse. Carlita, voiced by Carla Tassara, is a purple and teal kitty/car Gabby Cat who drives around the dollhouse and serves as transportation; in Dollhouse Hotel form, she works as a bellhop. Cakey, voiced by Juliet Donenfeld, is a small white kitty/cupcake Gabby Cat who makes treats in the kitchen and can create sprinkles when sad or excited. Daniel James DJ Catnip, voiced by Eduardo Franco, is a lavender kitty/disc jockey Gabby Cat who wears a glittery hoodie that stretches his tail and legs to play instruments; in Dollhouse Hotel form, he is the hotel manager.

Production and development

The show was announced in 2019 and released early in the COVID-19 pandemic. It was the first DreamWorks property with creators based in New York City instead of Los Angeles, and the entire production team connected via videoconferencing, also a first for DreamWorks. The themes of dollhouses, miniatures, and cats were the creators' favorites; the dollhouse deliveries were inspired by unboxing videos, tweaked to unbox a story rather than a product. Cats were not initially the main theme—DJ Catnip was originally a clock—but changed based on cat video trends. Early in production, the creators adopted Carol Dweck's The Growth Mindset, promoting the idea of celebrating mistakes and failing fantastically. The soundtrack includes genres like disco/pop, as the creators disliked saccharine-sweet music. Animation production was provided by multiple studios including Technicolor Animation Productions (later Mikros Animation) for seasons 1–4, with live action by One-Take Floyd. For the upcoming fourteenth season, Celestina Harris was cast as Doozie.

Other media

A feature-length live-action hybrid film, Gabby's Dollhouse: The Movie, was announced on April 25, 2024, and released on September 26, 2025. Ryan Crego directed, Steven Schweickart produced, and Traci Paige Johnson and Jennifer Twomey served as executive producers. In the story, Gabby travels to Cat Francisco with her grandmother Gigi, played by Gloria Estefan. When a cat lady named Vera, portrayed by Kristen Wiig, gets hold of the dollhouse, Gabby must rescue it and the Gabby Cats in the real world. In 2024, the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade featured a balloon of Gabby and Pandy Paws. A video game, DreamWorks Gabby's Dollhouse: Ready to Party, came out on September 18, 2025. Universal Kids Resort includes a themed land based on the franchise. Lego Gabby's Dollhouse, a Lego theme licensed from DreamWorks Animation Television and Netflix, launched on August 1, 2023. It includes four sets with minidoll figures of Gabby, Cakey Cat, Kitty Fairy, MerCat, and Pandy Paws, designed for children aged four and up. The sets recreate the series' story and characters, focusing on Gabby and the Gabby Cats protecting the dollhouse.
