Characters

The animated series centers on Puss in Boots, a boastful adventurer voiced by Eric Bauza. He accidentally shatters the magical barrier protecting the town of San Lorenzo and decides to remain there until he can fix it. Dulcinea, voiced by Jayma Mays, is a sweet, naive, and sheltered female cat who becomes his love interest. Artephius, also known as the Great Mage Sino and voiced by Paul Rugg, is an elderly alchemist who behaves like a mad scientist; his true identity is revealed in season six. Señora Zapata, voiced by Carla Jimenez, is the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe and runs the local orphanage, often acting as an antagonist to Puss. Mayor Temoroso, voiced by Carlos Alazraqui, is a large man who prefers to stay out of sight by hiding inside barrels, despite being the town’s mayor. Pajuna, voiced by Laraine Newman, is a Highland cow who owns the cantina. Vina, voiced by Grey Griffin, is an older orphan who makes up facts and frequently gets too close to Puss. Toby, voiced by Joshua Rush, is a pig orphan who worships Puss. Kid Pickles, voiced by Candi Milo, is an eleven-year-old with a fondness for pickles. Esme, voiced by Ariebella Makana, is an adorable five-year-old girl. Li’l Pequeña, voiced by Grey Griffin, is a new girl introduced in season five who can sometimes be evil. Cleevil, also called Green Tulpa and voiced by Candi Milo, is a street-smart goblin in her early teens who becomes a tulpa in season six. The Sphinx, voiced by Grey Griffin, is a hairless, winged cat who acts like a valley girl and hipster and occasionally protects San Lorenzo. El Moco, voiced by Danny Trejo, is a bandit king who is repeatedly foiled by Puss and ends up trapped in a wooden box. The Duchess, also known as Maldoma Eldritch and voiced by Maria Bamford, steals souls from magicians to gain power, despite having no magic herself; she once fought Puss, who cut off her foot, and later teams up with him to stop the Bloodwolf. Jack Sprat, voiced by John Leguizamo, is one of Puss’s oldest friends, whose schemes often land Puss in trouble.

Critical reception

The New York Times gave the first episode a positive review, noting the show is nicely drawn and populated with appealingly odd residents, and praised its relatively sophisticated humor that still appeals to children. In 2015, the second episode, "Sphinx," was nominated at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival. In 2016, the series won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Casting for an Animated Series or Special.
