Production
Showrunner Scott Kreamer initially declined but changed his mind after receiving an early rundown of Jurassic World Dominion, which inspired a direct sequel with older versions of the Camp Cretaceous cast, similar to the later Harry Potter films. Kreamer and co-showrunner Aaron Hammersley reunited with story editor Bethany Armstrong Johnson to conceive the story. The series was announced at Netflix's Geeked Week in November 2023. Netflix announced a second season in June 2024, a third in January 2025, and a fourth and final season in June 2025. The series is set shortly before Jurassic World Dominion. Kreamer wanted to explore what the mainland dinosaur world looks like for everyday people. The producers emphasized the characters being older and figuring out their identities while facing trauma, dinosaur proliferation, and a recent loss. The writers made the show a conspiracy thriller, contrasting with Camp Cretaceous's adventurous tone. The series opens with Brooklynn's assumed death, written in response to criticism that Camp Cretaceous did not put characters in enough danger. Holographic immersion technology was introduced to expose people to dinosaur fears without close contact, particularly to explore Yaz's PTSD. The showrunners established Yaz as having studied psychology to use the technology to help herself and others.
Reception
Critics gave the first season of the show a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes, averaging 7.9 out of 10 from six reviews. Randy Myers of Mercury News awarded it three out of four stars, saying the showrunners made the characters as gripping as the dinosaur action. Felipe Rangel of Screen Rant liked the higher stakes and stronger horror elements but pointed out the obvious recasting of Brooklynn’s voice. For season two, Daniel Hart of Ready Steady Cut appreciated that the writers made Brooklynn a layered character instead of resetting the Nublar Six. Danielle Solzman of Solzy At The Movies gave the third season four out of five, praising the extra backstory left out of the Jurassic World movies. Nicholas Brooks of CBR praised the fourth season’s tension and character-driven story but felt it had trouble connecting to the larger film series and the concurrent Jurassic World: Dominion.
