Production

DreamWorks and Netflix announced the CGI animated series during National Panda Day in March 2022, with Jack Black reprising his role as Po and serving as executive producer alongside Peter Hastings and Shaunt Nigoghossian. Story editing and co-executive production were handled by Kipo writers Chris Amick and Ben Mekler. The concept began as a road buddy comedy taking viewers across various locations in pursuit of villains. Jack Black envisioned an epic journey fitting the first film's tone but with a darker, more mature feel than previous franchise chapters. Season 2 expanded the concept to explore Indian and Central American cultures while deepening characters from the first season. Sets were built using assets from The Paws of Destiny, though some episodes feature 2D animation styles tailored to their settings: one rendered as comic graphic art tied to an unpublished comic book central to that chapter, and another with a British-looking lithograph aesthetic. A score soundtrack by Kevin Lax and Robert Lydecker was released on July 15 by Back Lot Music. Animation production services were provided by Technicolor (now Mikros Animation), 88 Pictures for Season 2, and Stella Creative Labs, with storyboard services by Dave Enterprises and Kok & Co., Pty, Ltd. The first season released on July 14, 2022; a second season announced in December 2022 arrived on January 12, 2023; and a third and final season announced in August 2023 released on September 7, 2023.
