Premise
The series follows Anne Boonchuy, a Thai-American girl who, on her 13th birthday, is peer-pressured into stealing a magical music box called the Calamity Box. The box transports her and her best friends Sasha Waybright and Marcy Wu to Amphibia, a wild marshland island inhabited by anthropomorphic amphibians, where they are separated. Anne is taken in by the Plantars, a frog family consisting of Sprig, Polly, and Hop Pop, who live on a farm in Wartwood. As she bonds with them, Anne learns about heroism and friendship while trying to find her friends and return home. Sasha allies with Captain Grime, leader of the toads of Toad Tower, who seek to control Frog Valley. In the second season, Anne and the Plantars travel to Newtopia to learn the Calamity Box's secrets and reunite with Marcy, who helps restore the box's power through ancient trials, unaware that King Andrias has secret plans. Sasha and Grime plot to invade Newtopia. In the third season, Anne and the Plantars are transported to Anne's home in Los Angeles, where she helps them adjust to the human world while searching for a way back to Amphibia to stop Andrias's multiverse invasion. They join a resistance formed by Sasha and Grime against Andrias, who uses Marcy as a host for the Core, a multi-eyed artificial intelligence.
Production
Disney Channel gave the green light to Amphibia on February 23, 2018, ordering 20 episodes alongside The Owl House. The show was created and executive-produced by Matt Braly, who had previously worked as a storyboard artist on Gravity Falls and later directed episodes of both Gravity Falls and Big City Greens. Braly revealed on Twitter that he had been developing the series for nearly two years before the announcement, first coming up with the idea as work on Gravity Falls was winding down. He created early character designs in 2015 under the working title Amphibiland, which was originally set in a forest instead of a town, and the character Sprig was initially conceived as anxious before becoming mischievous. Ahead of its premiere, on May 15, 2019, Disney Channel renewed the series for a second season of 20 episodes. On June 23, 2020, it was renewed for a third season of 18 episodes before the second season aired. In a Reddit AMA, Braly called Amphibia a three-act story, with season two as the second act, and said he had planned the narrative for three seasons, implying the third would be the finale. Storyboard artist Alex Swanson confirmed on Twitter on March 16, 2022, that season three was indeed the last. The show drew from Braly’s childhood trips to Bangkok, Thailand. Its tone was influenced by Aardman Animations and Studio Ghibli films, its storytelling by Gravity Falls and Steven Universe, and its creation by video games like The Legend of Zelda and Chrono Trigger. Additional inspirations included Batman: The Animated Series, Disney’s Gargoyles, and episodes of Pepper Ann and Dragon Ball Z.
Reception
Critics praised the series for its strong character work and thematic depth. Emily Ashby gave it four stars, highlighting the joy of Sprig and Anne's adventures, which she attributed to their compatible personalities and the sweet friendship that grows between them. She also noted the show effectively tackles bullying and emotional manipulation in ways that resonate with children and preteens, sparking discussion. Bekah Burbank lauded the show's balance of humor and scarier moments, along with its fast pacing, bouncy animation, and delightful characters, calling it clever and goofy with enough fright to keep kids engaged. Dave Trumbore also awarded the first two episodes four stars, calling them a strong introduction. In 2021, the series won an Annie Award for Best Character Design and was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Children's Animated Program, losing to Hilda. The season 2 finale, "True Colors," earned three Annie Award nominations in 2022 for Best TV/Media - Children, Best Direction, and Best Editorial.
In other media
The animated series Chibiverse, based on the Chibi Tiny Tales shorts, includes characters from Amphibia. A real-world version of Marcy’s in-show journal, titled Marcy's Journal: A Guide to Amphibia, came out on December 6, 2022, from Disney Books and TokyoPop. Creator Matt Braly and writer Adam Colás wrote it, with illustrations by character designer Catharina Sukiman. It contains stories not in the series and expands on the show’s lore and characters. Another book, The Art of Amphibia, was released in March 2025 by the same publishers. This 225-page volume features artwork from all three seasons, development materials, and crew work, with a foreword by Brenda Song. Braly mentioned this won’t be the final Amphibia book with TokyoPop, hinting at a future project centered on Sprig.
