Billy Dilley, voiced by Aaron Springer, is a 12-year-old science enthusiast who is curious and willing to explore the creatures of Subterranea-Tania. He is described as silly, weird, trouble-prone, and optimistic. Zeke, voiced by Tom Kenny, is a long-haired slacker assigned to work with Billy; he tries to appear cool but is emotional and often makes sarcastic remarks, and is a talented chef. Production

The show was first announced in 2014 as a potential pilot. In March 2016, Disney XD confirmed it had greenlit the series along with Country Club. Merriwether Williams was confirmed as a writer in 2015, and character designer Robertryan Cory had been working on the series since December 2014. Jessica McKenna was originally chosen to voice Billy Dilley, but creator Aaron Springer was ultimately cast in the role.
