3rd Rock from the Sun
Four aliens study humans while posing as a family.
Last updated
The series follows a group of aliens disguised as a human family in Ohio to observe Earth.[1] John Lithgow received Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series each year the show aired, winning in 1996, 1997, and 1999.[2]
Making and release
In the United States, Carsey-Werner Distribution handled syndication, which began in September 1999 and continued in limited-run barter syndication until 2016.[3] As of 2026, it was available on Amazon Prime Video, Tubi, Pluto TV, Crackle, Vudu, Peacock, and other services, but not outside purchase.[4] Anchor Bay Entertainment released all six seasons on DVD in 2005–2006, with seasons 1 and 2 containing edited syndicated versions.[5] Between 2002 and 2006, ABC Family broadcast reruns of the show.[3]
BBC Two first aired the series in the United Kingdom from 1996 until 2002, and later, between 2005 and 2006, ITV2 broadcast all episodes again.[6] The complete series became available on Netflix in March 2011, was taken down later that fall, was added again on March 15, 2015, and was removed exactly two years after that.[7] Hulu also offered the series for streaming.[8]
What the cited sources add
A Geeks of Doom article from February 2015 listed the complete series as coming to Netflix on March 15, 2015, describing it as part of NBC's must-see comedy line-up from 1996 to 2001.[1] The same article noted that the series starred John Lithgow, Kristen Johnston, French Stewart, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as extraterrestrials posing as a family.[1] A Tubi listing describes the show as a group of aliens sent to Earth disguised as a human family to experience and report life on the third planet.[9]
