Belching, also called burping and eructation, is the audible release of gas from the upper gastrointestinal tract (esophagus and stomach) of humans and other animals into the pharynx, usually out through the mouth. It is a normal physiological process that can be caused by eating, drinking carbonated beverages, or swallowing air, and may also be a symptom of medical conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or a belching disorder.
