Composition and lyrics
"Ignite" is an up-tempo electronic rock and J-pop track in G minor, running four minutes and four seconds at 171 beats per minute. It follows a standard verse-chorus structure, starting with a distorted synthesizer riff before shifting to a guitar-driven sound. The bridge introduces a string quartet of viola, two violins, and cello, creating a contrast with the electronic elements. Co-written by Eir Aoi and Tomoyuki Ogawa, the lyrics use fire and ignition as metaphors for inner strength, mirroring Kirito's psychological struggle with past trauma in the Phantom Bullet arc.
Media appearances and usage
While it is best known as the first opening theme for Sword Art Online II, the track also appears in rhythm games like BanG Dream! Girls Band Party! (performed by Roselia) and Sword Art Online: Integral Factor. A future bass remix by Fairlane came out in 2021 on the Sacra Beats YouTube channel. During 2014 and 2015, the song consistently placed among the top ten most-requested anime tracks on Japanese karaoke services DAM and Joysound.
Music video and live performances
The music video, filmed in mid-2014, shows Aoi performing in a high-contrast environment with pyrotechnic effects and silhouette lighting, paralleling the fire and light metaphors in the lyrics. Art direction was by Takuya Nakashiro (BUCCI), photography by Makoto Okuguchi, styling by Tatsuhiko Marumoto, and hair and makeup by NOBU. A short version was published to YouTube on July 11, 2014, accumulating over 10 million views. Aoi performed the song at Nippon Budokan in 2015 and 2018, at the ABU TV Song Festival in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan in 2018, and on The First Take in 2020, where a stripped-back arrangement was later released as a digital single.
Certifications and commercial impact
The single peaked at number one on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 and reached number nine on the Oricon Weekly Singles Chart. It appeared on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 Year-End list for 2014 at number 46. The Recording Industry Association of Japan certified the track Gold in 2015 and upgraded it to Platinum in January 2019, indicating over 250,000 paid downloads. It remains one of the highest-certified singles in the Sword Art Online franchise alongside works by LiSA.
