Ghost was formed in 2006 when future band leader Tobias Forge wrote the song 'Stand by Him'. Forge contacted his former Repugnant bandmate Gustaf Lindström to record the song. In early 2008, they recorded three songs, after which Forge decided they should be an anonymous 'theater band', using their love of horror films and Scandinavian metal traditions. Forge became the lead singer by default after several others declined the role. On 12 March 2010, Forge posted the first three Ghost songs on MySpace and within two days was contacted by record labels and managers. The band released their debut album Opus Eponymous on 18 October 2010 on Rise Above Records, reaching number 50 on the Sverigetopplistan and earning a Grammis nomination for Best Hard Rock album. Their first concert was on 23 October 2010 at the Hammer of Doom festival in Germany.

In 2012, Ghost signed with Loma Vista Recordings and released their second album Infestissumam in 2013, which charted at number one in Sweden and went gold. The band introduced Papa Emeritus II and later Papa Emeritus III. Their third album Meliora (2015) reached number one in Sweden and number eight in the US, and the single 'Cirice' won the 2016 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. In 2017, the identity of the lead singer was revealed to be Tobias Forge after several musicians who had worked with him started legal action over royalties. The band released subsequent albums Prequelle (2018) and Impera (2022). As of the established canon, Ghost has released five studio albums, and no sixth album titled Skeletá exists in real, widely-known history.
