At the Gates were formed in late 1990 by former members of the death and black metal band Grotesque. They recorded a debut EP, Gardens of Grief, for the Dolores record label, which led Peaceville Records to sign the band. Their debut album, The Red in the Sky Is Ours, was released in 1992. After recording their second studio album, With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness, founding member and guitarist Alf Svensson left in 1993 to pursue tattoo artistry, graphic novel illustration and his solo project Oxiplegatz. He was replaced by former House of Usher guitarist Martin Larsson. The band continued touring Europe and were filmed for a Headbangers Ball special feature in Nottingham, England in July 1993.

In 1994, At the Gates released their third album, Terminal Spirit Disease, hailed as a breakthrough. In 1995, they released Slaughter of the Soul on Earache Records, their most commercially and critically successful album, which firmly rooted the band as one of the leaders of the Swedish metal scene and the Gothenburg sound. Despite international attention, including U.S. tours and MTV rotation for the video 'Blinded by Fear,' guitarist Anders Björler departed in 1996 due to pressure from the album's success and the record company. The remaining members decided it would be impossible to continue without him, so the band broke up.

After a long hiatus, the band reunited in 2007 for a series of shows in 2008, including major festivals and a 'Suicidal Final Tour' of the US and Canada. The band's performance at Wacken Open Air 2008 is available on The Flames of the End DVD boxed set. In 2014, they released their fifth album, At War with Reality, through Century Media. Following the departure of Anders Björler in 2017, Jonas Stålhammar joined as guitarist. The band released To Drink from the Night Itself in 2018 and The Nightmare of Being in 2021. In 2022, Stålhammar departed and Anders Björler rejoined. In August 2025, the band disclosed that vocalist Tomas Lindberg had been diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma in December 2023. Lindberg continues to undergo treatment and remains an active member of the band.

Origins and the Birth of a Sound

The record brought genuine international recognition: the band landed multiple U.S. tours, and the music video for "Blinded by Fear" received heavy rotation on American MTV. Yet the very success that elevated them also proved destabilizing. According to vocalist Tomas Lindberg, guitarist Anders Björler's departure in 1996 stemmed from the mounting pressure of the album's reception combined with Earache Records pushing the group back into the studio. With Björler gone, the remaining members concluded that continuing without him was simply not feasible, and the band disbanded. The abruptness of the split left Slaughter of the Soul as their final statement for over a decade.

The Reunion That Wasn't Supposed to Last

On 18 October 2007, At the Gates announced a series of reunion shows scheduled for mid-2008, framed as a one-off celebration. The lineup of festivals was impressive: Getafe Electric, Roskilde, Ruisrock, Wacken Open Air, Graspop Metal Meeting, Sweden Rock Festival, Gods of Metal, Hellfest, and Bloodstock Open Air all featured the band. In May 2008 they toured Japan alongside Dillinger Escape Plan, Into Eternity, Pig Destroyer, and Mayhem, and in July they crossed the United States and Canada on what they dubbed the "Suicidal Final Tour." Their final UK appearance came at Bloodstock on 17 August 2008, and they closed the run in Athens, Greece, on 21 September with guest band The Ocean. The Wacken performance was later captured on The Flames of the End DVD, which also included clips from other venues and a full documentary tracing the band's history. What began as a farewell circuit, however, did not end as planned. The momentum of those shows convinced the members to keep the project alive, setting the stage for a genuine second era of recording and touring.

Building a Second Legacy

The post-reunion years saw At the Gates steadily expand their catalog. In 2014 they released At War with Reality through Century Media, followed by To Drink from the Night Itself in 2018, recorded at Parlour Studios in Kettering, England, with additional sessions in Gothenburg. The 2017 departure of guitarist Anders Björler brought a new permanent member in Jonas Stålhammar, who joined just in time for the follow-up's recording. The band's touring footprint remained vast, with 2018 dates spanning Europe, Asia, and North America, including festival slots at Graspop, Hellfest, Resurrection Fest, and Tuska, plus a North American run with Behemoth and Wolves in the Throne Room. Creative work on The Nightmare of Being, released in 2021, began during the previous album's tour cycle and continued into 2020. The band's most recent studio effort, The Ghost of a Future Dead, is slated for 2026. Along the way, Peaceville issued a 2001 retrospective compilation, Suicidal Final Art, and Lindberg's philosophy of "never saying never" became a guiding principle.
