Amon Amarth emerged from the earlier grindcore/death metal band Scum, founded in 1988. After Scum broke up, Amon Amarth formed in 1992 with vocalist Johan Hegg replacing Paul Mäkitalo. The band recorded early demos Thor Arise (1993) and The Arrival of the Fimbul Winter (1994), then signed with Pulverised Records for the MCD Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds (1996). They signed with Metal Blade Records in 1998 and released their debut album Once Sent from the Golden Hall that year. From Scum to Amon Amarth: The Birth of a Band

Amon Amarth traces its roots to a grindcore outfit called Scum, which was put together in 1988 by vocalist Paul Mäkitalo, guitarist Olavi Mikkonen, bassist Petri Tarvainen, and rhythm guitarist Vesa Meriläinen. After a 1991 demo, Scum dissolved, and three of its members carried forward into a new project. Naming, Themes, and the Viking Metal Question

The band's name is borrowed from Tolkien's legendarium: Amon Amarth is the Sindarin word for Mount Doom, the volcanic peak where the One Ring was forged and ultimately destroyed. The record debuted at number ten on the Swedish album chart and cracked the US Billboard 200 at number fifty, a first for the group. It featured guest contributions from Lars-Göran Petrov of Entombed, Roope Latvala of Children of Bodom, and the cello-metal project Apocalyptica, and was accompanied by an eight-page Norse-mythology comic strip distributed through European magazines. Revolver Magazine ranked it seventh among the year's top twenty albums. The momentum carried into Surtur Rising (2011), Deceiver of the Gods (2013), Jomsviking (2016), Berserker (2019), and The Great Heathen Army (2022), completing a twelve-studio-album catalog alongside a compilation, an EP, a video album, and ten music videos. From Wacken to Bangalore: A Global Touring Story

Amon Amarth's live career reflects a steady expansion from the European underground to a genuinely worldwide circuit. Early on, the band shared stages with acts like Deicide, Six Feet Under, and Brutal Truth, and became a fixture at Wacken Open Air, performing there in 1999, 2002 before a crowd of twelve thousand, and again in 2006. Their first American tour, originally planned for autumn 2001, was postponed by the September 11 attacks and finally took place in January 2002. By 2008, the group had reached Australia and New Zealand for the first time, supporting Dimmu Borgir. In December 2009 they headlined the Deccan Rock Festival in Bangalore, marking their first show in India. They also supported Slayer on the Unholy Alliance Chapter III European tour and headlined North American dates with support from bands like Ensiferum, Belphegor, Goatwhore, and Eluveitie.
